Expressive Painting Summer School
Whether you work from objects, the figure, or secondary sources, this is an opportunity to explore working more loosely using oils or acrylics. I will guide you through drawing and painting exercises to help loosen you up, and we will discuss art historical techniques which may be relevant to your individual artistic style and context. You will develop a set of criteria to explore ways of representing perceived objects in a more dynamic, painterly way. The emphasis is on working with your chosen source material to create a `next level’ painting. This course may suit if you have explored some of the basics of painting such as mixing colours, blending etc, but want to find a process that best expresses your unique approach and ideas.

Biography – Justine Turnbull
My work concentrates on the human condition, and the idea that change is constant and inevitable. This inherent instability shapes our experiences, our relationships, and our understanding of the world. I refer to myth and art history as a template to navigate these upheavals, which can be a catalyst for personal growth, self-discovery, and transformation. I work at the intersection of figuration and abstraction, using a gestural process that speaks to the perpetual state of flux, and the materiality of paint.
I graduated from Dunedin School of Art in 1998, taught and ran a successful business selling ceramic sculpture until 2004. Since then, I have maintained my painting practice, gaining an MFA and continuing tutoring at The Learning Connexion and Inverlochy Art schools in Wellington.
